Guess I can say that everything started back when I was about 13 years old; Back in Colombia. I started taking bass lessons, so I could start a punk band with my friends! Playing covers of Beastie Boys, Black Flag and The Ramones! That was the key to get into the music world. Now I have been dj-ing for more than a decade. I started in Barcelona, the city where I lived the last 10 years. Started playing hip hop, but jumped fast into electro and bassline. It actually started like a hobby, but turned to be my job and a big part of my life! It has taken me to play in amazing cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Ibiza, Stockholm, Bogotá, Paris and now Oslo!
My friends back in Barcelona started calling me Mustache after I shaved my beard and left a thick 70s mustache on for fun. Fast it became my nickname and I liked it so I kept both, the mustache and the nickname!
My music life started with punk, rock and grunge, but I always had a classical music background since my mom is a huge vinyl collector! My dad is also a music maniac and has a gigantic vinyl collection too, 60s and 70s rock and pop. So with that mix in my head I decided to start studying music, classical and jazz at the same time. That was really amazing and pushed me into the electronic music production, with the main objective of merging the best from every genre I liked. The result? You have to come to hear me! (or get in my site haha).
Its an extension of my personality, I`m always loyal to my taste and the sound that simply comes out from me. I don't try to make music to please people, I just express myself and love when people connect with me.
Bass, I love bass. It feels like the bass lines get into the people and make them shake in dance moves!
I like both worlds. The vinyl and the cd because people used to pay more attention to the music, take care of every single album, get to know about the artist and there´s no doubt that the sound of a vinyl is unique.
Now the digital world is commanding; it`s a good thing that you don't have to carry so many albums, or have a huge place to store them and the music quality now a days is awesome. BUT, in my opinion, music lost its value. And I'm sure that most of the people don't even know what they have in their iPods or mp3 devices… Music stopped being transcendent to become disposable. Hipsters know names of bands that don't even exist, the urge for having everything and brag about it but not the willing to enjoy every record.
Nirvana, Nevermind and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magic.
The B-52s, Rock Lobster
For me it`s always back to basics, rocknroll, funk and groove. It can be either T. Rex, Massive Attack or Miles Davis, as long as there is groove. That's enough for me! I admire Soulwax and James Murphy creator of Lcd Soundsystem and his label DFA records. They are doing only what they like to do, never trying to please the audience, I love that.
Without a doubt it has been Nasty Mondays in Barcelona, it's the craziest party I have ever played at! People go there willing to dance and have a blast, like if there wouldn't be a next time! 1500 maniacs giving everything in the dance floor, those are the events I love!
I was playing with another dj-friend. A girl from the audience jumped up on the stage, got in the booth, down on her knees and gave my friend a BJ, next to me, haha! I had to tell them after a while to go back stage. The whole damn thing was getting me nervous and I was loosing my focus, hahaha.
Guess I always have that feeling, but more nervous-anxious. I believe its because I'm always trying to give it all, and I don't want to disappoint anyone. I want every one to have a blast, as I do myself always! The day I loose that feeling, then it will be just a job, not a passion. If that happens I will quit!
I have my studio at home now, so I can enjoy music with a high audio quality. I can't hear music from the laptop speakers like a lot of people do! That drives me NUTS!! If I am not at home I always use great headphones Denon or Technics. I always dreamed of having a Cerwin Vega home theater system! I love bass and quality.
I think its sad that people hear most of the music from their laptop speakers. Now days we all spend a lot of time with our computer or smart phone, and the problem is that not so many people invest in good headphones or speakers. It has happened to me so many times, going to a party at someone's home and the music is coming directly from the laptop speakers! WTF? There´s no bass!! I hate it.
Well from my humble opinion, enjoy more, dance, be yourself, invest in good sound gear and enjoy the way up to the top because in that journey is where the real happiness is!!
Yes, living in Oslo now and I'm really happy about it! I have always been fascinated by this mysterious country, far up on the globe. Troll, midnight sun, snow, high mountains, stunning nature, art and goat cheese. I actually like the odd brown cheese. Love the girls too, haha ;) My fiancé happens to be a gorgeous Norwegian, so here I am!
Big fan. Artists like the Knife, Erlend Øye, Maya Vik, Turbonegro, Oh Land, Mew, Ralph Myerz, Datarock are a huge inspiration for me, I love the sound that comes from Scandinavia, I find it really unique, so now I am immerse in the scandinavian culture trying to steal a little piece from it!!
I like the scene in Oslo. It's a smaller scene than the one I am used to, but there are great clubs and a big electronic scene emerging right now! Norwegians are open to electronic music and now you can see that people don't think about electronic music as "techno ntz ntz", and nothing else! I see people following the djs here, and digging the new concepts. People have welcomed me amazingly and dig my music concept. They love bass and electro, so I love to make part of this!
It`s an honor to have this 2 nights with Hi-Fi Klubben, all I can say is that this will be different! I will use the best sound system possible, to make people shake to every beat. VJ slurp will be by my side working on the visuals with a very unique style. We worked together in Barcelona, and now we will be here to show what we can do. Make people burn their dancing shoes while the are hypnotized by the bonkers visuals! New beats, new remixes, new sound and an epic party! What else can I say?
The parties will work strictly with guestlist. Soon there will be a spot on the website http://www.hifiklubben.no/kundeklubb/oya-2012/ . Just get in and put your name (s) , we have limited places, so don't take to long. Rockefeller 11pm, 2 nights of impossible not to dance music.
